Jennifer Baird was born in England in 1955. Her father's side of the family were all highly artistic and so she was influenced from an early age, her father being her first teacher. Another very important influence in her teenage years was the artist and art teacher Bob White and the famously vibrant and innovative art scene in the 'Art Room' at Sevenoaks School.
In 1979, after spending several years studying Tibetan Buddhism (including Tibetan Iconography) - Jennifer went to live on the tiny unspoiled island of Tobago in the West Indies, where she resided for over 30 years. During that time she exhibited many times in both Trinidad and Tobago and sold hundreds of paintings to collectors from around the world. The last 16 years of her time on Tobago were spent living as a recluse, high in the wild and remote rainforest - painting, meditating and living an extremely simple life without electricity or any mod cons.
Jennifer now lives in England and is at present painting a transitional body of work, exploring the processes of integrating her many years in the tropics into a completely new phase of life in the vibrant and beautiful coastal town of Hastings.
Over the last 40+ years Jennifer has produced a diverse array of works, ranging from the scenic and narrative to the mystical and visionary; developing varied styles and techniques along the way. The influence of many cultures, mythologies and metaphysical ideas can be seen weaving a continuum through her work: exploring themes, patterns and foci as they evolve through her inner and outer worlds. Although many of her current paintings are still figurative, her work has been evolving toward the abstract, where colour combinations and complex layering, texturing and other techniques have become a strong focus - with subject and meaning deep and subtle, so that exploration, delight and curiosity in the aesthetics become the primary portal into the work.
By allowing the process to remain organic and not over-intellectualised or contrived - the ongoing emergence will be aligned with the artist's burning curiosity in the evolution of consciousness and the spiritual in Art.
Because of these and other qualities in Jennifer's paintings, she was selected as one of 17 artists from around the world to participate in the first International Integral Art exhibition in San Francisco 2015 and at the Integral European Conference 2016 in Hungary. In 2020 she co-curated and exhibited her work at the first International Integral Art virtual exhibition.
